ARS, Asociación para el Estudio de Residuos Sólidos, is a non-profit association established in Buenos Aires, Argentina, created in 1997. Its major objective is to professionalize and provide qualifications for those individuals and/or entities associated to the collection, transport, recycling and final disposal of solid waste. The need to improve the existing solid waste management techniques gave rise to its foundation.
ARS came into existence thanks to the concern of a number of significant companies and institutions developed in the waste management field, moved by the need to provide the sector with representation and to join forces for the improvement of those techniques allowing the preservation of the environment.
The increase in urban solid waste generation is an effect of urbanization and economic development, and it is essential that this growth does not become detrimental to human environment. The problem of solid waste is not exempted from being put forward within the framework of the apparent contradiction existing between economic development and environmental quality.
